Description

What is GTN 0.4% Rectal Ointment?

GTN 0.4% Rectal Ointment (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is a prescription medication used to relieve the symptoms of chronic anal fissures. It works by relaxing the blood vessels around the anus, increasing blood flow to the area and helping the fissure heal more quickly. GTN ointment also helps reduce the internal anal sphincter pressure, relieving pain and discomfort during and after bowel movements.

This 30g tube contains 0.4% strength glyceryl trinitrate, the standard concentration typically used in treating anal fissures. It is applied directly inside or around the anus using a clean fingertip or an applicator, as directed by your healthcare provider.

Relief from pain may begin within the first few days of treatment, but the ointment is usually used for up to 8 weeks to allow full healing. GTN ointment should be used with care, especially for patients prone to low blood pressure or dizziness.

The most common side effect is headache, which is usually mild and temporary. GTN ointment is not recommended for use with certain medications, such as erectile dysfunction treatments, due to the risk of significant blood pressure drops.

How should I use GTN Ointment?

  • Apply a small amount (pea-sized) to the affected area every 12 hours.
  • Wash hands before and after application.
  • Insert a fingertip or use an applicator if directed.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed amount.
  • Continue for up to 8 weeks or as advised by your doctor.

  • Common: dizziness, light-headedness, or local irritation.
  • Rare: fainting or drop in blood pressure, especially when standing quickly.
