What is Hyoscine (Buscopan)?
Hyoscine Tablets, branded as Buscopan, are an antispasmodic medication used to relieve abdominal cramps, bloating, and discomfort caused by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), period pain, or other gastrointestinal disorders. The active ingredient, hyoscine butylbromide, works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the stomach, intestines, and bladder.
By targeting the source of cramping and spasm, Buscopan provides fast and effective relief without affecting normal digestive function. It is commonly prescribed to patients with IBS or other spasmodic conditions of the gut, including functional bowel disorders.
Each tablet contains of hyoscine butylbromide and begins working within 15–30 minutes. This treatment is convenient for regular or as-needed use, based on the severity and frequency of symptoms. Buscopan is generally well tolerated and is non-drowsy for most users.
While available over the counter in smaller packs, the treatment is typically provided on prescription for longer-term or more consistent symptom control.
