Description
What is Almotriptan 12.5mg?
Almotriptan 12.5mg is a prescription medicine used to treat acute migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans, or serotonin (5-HT1) receptor agonists, which work by narrowing widened blood vessels in the brain and blocking pain signals associated with migraines.
This medication does not prevent migraines from occurring but is highly effective when taken at the onset of symptoms. It can relieve pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound within hours. Many patients report significant improvement or complete relief from migraine symptoms with a single dose.
Almotriptan is taken orally and is suitable for patients who require fast, effective relief without the need for injections or dissolvable tablets. It’s typically well-tolerated, with most side effects being mild and short-lived.
The 12.5mg dose is the standard effective strength for most adults and can be used on its own or as part of a broader migraine management plan advised by your doctor.
What does Almotriptan treat?
- Acute migraine attacks – with or without aura in adults aged 18 to 65 years
Almotriptan is not suitable for treating other types of headaches (e.g., tension headaches or cluster headaches).
How does Almotriptan work?
Almotriptan targets serotonin (5-HT1B/1D) receptors in the brain. It causes blood vessels that have become widened during a migraine attack to narrow again, while also blocking the release of certain natural substances that trigger pain, nausea, and other migraine-related symptoms.
