What is Flucloxacillin?

Flucloxacillin Capsules are a penicillin-based antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, especially those caused by staphylococcal bacteria. It is commonly prescribed for skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, chest infections, and infected wounds.

The active ingredient, flucloxacillin sodium, works by preventing bacteria from forming a proper cell wall, leading to their destruction. It is particularly effective against bacteria that produce beta-lactamase, which makes other antibiotics less effective.

This treatment is suitable for moderate to severe infections and is often prescribed four times daily, spaced evenly throughout the day. For best results, flucloxacillin should be taken on an empty stomach — either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Each capsule contains flucloxacillin and is typically used in adults and children over the age of 10, unless otherwise directed by a healthcare provider.

How should I take Flucloxacillin?

  • Take one capsule 4 times daily, or as prescribed.
  • Take on an empty stomach—1 hour before or 2 hours after food.
  • Swallow whole with water. Do not chew or open the capsule.
  • Complete the full course, even if you start to feel better.

  • Common: diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion, skin rash.
  • Less common: joint pain, sore mouth, or taste disturbances.
  • Rare but serious: liver problems (e.g. jaundice), severe allergic reactions, or Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea.
